We visited the Pot Luck Club last week and tried their new menu. Regulars will be happy to know that favourites like the Smoked Beef Fillet with Black Pepper and Truffle Café au Lait still remains but there are so many new and exciting dishes to choose from.

We started with some of the new cocktails and loved all of them – the Lemon Drop Cosmo is made with lemon vodka for a bit of zing, the Raspberry and Coconut Caipirinha is deliciously coconutty with the raspberry notes adding some tartness and the Blueberry Apple and Cinnamon just rocks.

One of the new dishes that we loved was the Winter Vegetable Salad. This is just genius. It adds a lighter vegetable offering to the menu but it is incredibly tasty in its own right as the root veg are cooked in the ash from the grill. It was served up front with the Crispy Calamari but I almost think it would have been better served with the fillet towards the end, when you need some freshness to balance all the rich meaty dishes. But either way, it’s delicious.

Frans’ favourite dish was the Prawn and King Crab stuffed Chicken Wings with Lime Crème Fraiche and Sriracha. The waiter jokily called it KFC but the only thing it has in common is that it tastes better eaten with your fingers. The lime really comes through and the crispy chicken has exactly the right crunch. My favourite was the Crispy Sweetbread Ssam, with Orange & Chorizo Marmalade and Pickled Jalapeno. The flavours in this dish were perfect – orangey and savoury, with a bit of bite from the jalapenos and bitterness from the leaves. To me, it was perfect – and I’m sorry for people who don’t try it simply because it’s sweetbreads. Nothing could be more delicious. And finally we have to mention the Creamy Mashed Potato, Smoked Chicken Jus and Truffled Goat’s Cheese. OMG. Whoever thought we’d be raving about mashed potato? But it’s that amazing. And so good served with the fillet. I could have eaten a giant bowl of just that.

We finished with the Hazelnut & Apple Tart, Salted Caramel and Smoked Cinnamon Ice Cream. Yummy deluxe. Thinly sliced apple just how we like it and the addition of the hazelnuts works brilliantly. And also the Grapefruit Margarita Sorbet with Caiperatif Jelly and Grapefruit Salsa – a really refreshing ending if you’ve eaten too much. #justsaying

We were reminded once more why we love this restaurant. It’s probably our favourite in Cape Town – for an all-encompassing brilliant time. The food is accessible and delicious, the staff are friendly and really knowledgeable and the evening is always one to remember. Magnifique!
