Our favourite place to stay in Paternoster is ‘Klein Gelukkie’, a lovely little self-catering cottage just outside the fishing village of Paternoster. It means that you’re close enough to the beach and restaurants, while still being able to enjoy the peace and quiet by being just beyond the boundaries of the town. There is a second little cottage called ‘Nog ‘n Gelukkie’ (love that name) but we’ve never stayed there – we prefer the additional space of the bigger cottage.

With cement floors and a natural palette, the cottage is extremely spacious – a large open plan kitchen that is spotlessly clean and well-equipped, enormous bedroom with king-sized bed, a reading nook and an outside area with a braai and breakfast table. The large glass windows in the kitchen/dining room and bedroom look out over the garden where we enjoyed the birds splashing about in the fountain and building their nests. And we often left the door open to welcome the owners’ dog Bob, who loves popping round for a morning inspection or to lounge on the daybed.

They are a wedding venue too so the dates do tend to get booked up in season. But keep your eyes open on their website and certainly join their newsletter because they often have specials with discounted rates if you are able to be flexible with your dates.
